Overview

Procedural Layers provide the ability to add controlled procedural structures quickly to your terrain.

How to incorporate a Procedural Layer into your terrain

Similar to other Shape Layers, the Procedural Layer provides you with the classical blending operations that come with areas in World Creator. As a result, you can seamlessly blend it with different blending modes and achieve a smooth and rounded interpolation.

The most important parameter, however, is the Level Step which is further explained in this article. Specify the World Creator terrain upsampling and filtering level in which the Procedural Layer will be inserted into the terrain. Choosing a lower layer results in losing some details generated by the Procedural Layer but allows more levels in which World Creators filters can work. Choosing a higher level provides more detail from the Procedural Layer, but results in a loss of some editing power provided by the filters.

If the Procedural Layer does not appear on your selected level step, it may be due to a higher biomes level step or another shape layer overwriting it.

Different shape types

Presently, Procedural Layers provide the following five structures, with more to be added in the future.

Cliff

The cliff is designed with sloping shapes and additional distortion effects that can be useful for creating mountain walls, transitioning into beaches, or other straight paths between two different elevation levels.

Crater

The crater can be used to add realistic craters onto your terrain. In addition to determining the crater width, depth, overall rim height, and curvatures, you also have the option to scatter multiple craters across your terrain layer.

Island

The island shape provides options for mapping various parts of an island's topography, including ocean depth, beach dimensions, forest height and coverage, and mountain height, to create a base for your islands. This encompasses ocean depth, beach dimensions, forest height and coverage, and mountain height - all contributing to sculpting the perfect island base for you.

Single Crack

The single crack can be used to add a crevice to your terrain. In addition to standard noise-based distortion, you can add multiple controlled, randomized cracks to your terrain using the same shape layer.

Volcano

The volcano provides an inner crater similar to a crater but with a steeper, mountain-like contour. There are adjustable controls for the inside, outside distortion, and overall mountain appearance.
