Overview

The MapTiler Layer enables loading real-world satellite height and color data into World Creator either as a base for your terrain or to improve your procedural creation.

Setting up MapTiler 

The MapTiler Layer requires a service token from MapTiler to connect to their servers and download data in World Creator.


To obtain the service token, create an account at https://www.maptiler.com/. Either use a free account (with watermarks) or one of their paid account models.


After signing in, navigate to the Account settings and open the Credentials tab. Click the New Credentials button and enter a name. Then, click Save.

Your service token should now be visible. Copy and paste it into the MapTiler options tab in the World Creator's settings. Click on Apply and if a MapTiler layer is added to your terrain, the loaded satellite data will be visible.

Using the MapTiler Layer


Upon the successful activation of the MapTiler service token, the satellite data should load. In the map settings, you can navigate the world map by dragging and dropping, as well as using the mouse wheel, to locate your desired location.


In addition to the general navigation and shape layer settings, you have access to the following parameters:

  • Type
    Changes the preview mode of the map placement window in the settings


  • Preview Type
    Alters the way MapTiler data is applied to the scene. This is relevant if you are subscribed to a paid plan because you only have a limited number of requests for high-quality maps.


  • Flip X/Y
    Enables changing the orientation of the map


  • Height/Color Resolution
    The resolution is loaded from MapTiler. This can affect the performance.


Using MapTiler on a terrain


In addition to enhancing a real-life location in World Creator, we can use MapTiler to quickly add features to our terrain. Here, we aim to add a mountain to our existing terrain.
After adding a MapTiler layer, we select our mountain, which is Monte Cristallo in the Dolomites in this instance. Subsequently, we copy and paste its coordinates into the map settings and zoom in to map it onto the terrain.


To apply a filter stack to our mountain and avoid unnecessary high-quality features from MapTiler, we will use a lower level step. To prevent the satellite colormap from taking over our materials, we also need to disable the Use Shape Layer Toggle in our materials.
